Get Connected: ComETS Spring 2009 Symposium
Tuesday, 14 Apr 2009, 1:00pm - 5:00pm, Howe Hall
ComETS is a newly formed Iowa State University community that promotes dialog and events focused on technology in learning & teaching. ComETS is intended to be a university-wide community where ideas and resources can be shared, and debate can occur on future technology directions at ISU. ComETS is open to all interested ISU faculty and staff.
The symposium consisted of four parts:
-
a keynote by George Siemens, University of Manitoba, titled "The Impact of Connectivism and Networked Learning." Siemens is a writer, speaker, and researcher on learning, networks, technology and organizational effectiveness in digital environments. He is the author of Knowing Knowledge, an exploration of how the context and characteristics of knowledge have changed and what it means to organizations today. Siemens is also Associate Director, Research and Development, with the Learning Technologies Centre at University of Manitoba. Find out more about George Siemens.
-
affinity, or special interest groups met to begin discussions about several different topics, including
- Learning environments / course management systems
- clickers
- podcasting
The affinity groups have faculty and staff facilitators, and the intent is that these will be ongoing discussion groups that will continue to meet in the future, either electronically, face to face, or both.
-
"Lightning Strikes" are short (no longer than 10 minute) presentations from members of the ISU community.
-
a panel of current students gathered to tell us about their expectations regarding technology on campus.
